This is the homepage for all of the U.S. Army casernes that were at Orleans (Caligny, Harbord Barracks, La Chapelle Maison Fort, Samec & Saran Airfield). The army had several bases there between 1950 & 1967.Today some of these bases have been taken over by the French Military or by civilian authorities. Orleans is located on the Loire River on the site of Genabum, the Celtic town burned in 52 BC by the Roman General Gaius Julius Caesar. In 1429 Joan of Arc broke a long siege of the city by the English. Many Protestants were killed here in St Bartholomew's Day massacre (1572) The city was badly damaged during World War II. Today you can visit and see the Orleans Cathedral, Fine Art and other museums, and see the great Renaissance architecture of the city. Today Orleans is a commercial center with a population of about 105,000. Over the years many Orleans veterans have returned on visits.
